A Seal engraving is engraved in reverse and very deep in order to take a wax impression of that seal. Usually engraved onto a gold or stone set signet ring with a Family Crest or Coat of Arms. The lettering or motto is also engraved in reverse so that the wax impression taken of that Seal shows in positive. When the wax impression of the Seal is viewed it appears as a miniature sculpture showing the minutest of detail.
